Kim Wook-dong: The Path of a Translator

Western literature is not a small number of scholars who often claim that it is the product of translation. In fact, the first chapter of Western literature is not a big mistake even though it begins in translation. Translation is important not only for Western literature but also for Korean and Asian literature. So, in the East and in the West, translation serves as a bridge to the literature of one culture, and the literature is connected to another. A translator is a shipman who makes us cross rivers that lie between land and land. Without a ferryman, the literature of a country would be trapped in a fence of ethnic literature, just as a translator would have to stay on land. English translator George Steiner once declared: “If there is no translation, we will live in a corner near the silence.". It's the power of translation that we live in, not in silence, but in meaningful conversation with other countries.
