Kim Soon-eun et al.: Local autonomy in Korea
To commemorate this meaningful year marking the 30th anniversary of the revival of local autonomy, a series of three academic seminars on local autonomy in Korea was held in the autumn of 2021. These events served as a forum for discourse to objectively analyze and reflect upon the changes that have unfolded over the past 70 years since the establishment of the Republic of Korea government—going back beyond the past 30 years since the re-implementation of local autonomy—and to explore future development strategies based on this foundation. At the first seminar (October 15), a total of 24 scholars presented papers and engaged in discussions on "The Relationship Between the Central and Local Governments and Decentralization Reform"; at the second seminar (October 22), on "Local Governance"; and at the third seminar (October 29), on "Regional Development Policy." This book compiles the introductions and conclusions added to the 20 papers refined through these three seminars. I hope that this book, written by top-level experts on various topics, will be utilized for academic research and policy development for years to come.
