Description

How can teachers speak in ways that protect themselves without getting hurt is the follow-up to the education bestseller Practicing a Teacher’s Words. The first book covered conversations inside the classroom, including teaching, student guidance, parent meetings, and relationships with colleagues. This book focuses on communication with parents outside the classroom, especially the parent-related material that drew the strongest response in the earlier book. Teachers face many difficult situations throughout the year, and parent complaints are among the most draining. The author first distinguishes a parent’s request for a consultation, advice, or cooperation from a complaint demanding a particular outcome. Through real cases involving disruption of school work and violations of teachers’ professional rights, the author offers practical, thoughtful ways to respond.

I recommend this book to anyone who finds it hard to talk with parents. It offers model responses for different situations, helping you understand what the other person means and how to respond so the conversation goes smoothly, while protecting your self-esteem.

If you want smoother conversations with parents, or have been hurt by one, find comfort and direction in How can teachers speak in ways that protect themselves without getting hurt. Unlike teaching students, I get very nervous when I call parents. From pressing the call button to hearing the ring and then a parent’s voice, anxiety and worry circle in my mind. This began three years ago, when a parent called to ask about enrolling a child. After speaking with me, the mother complained to the

I have been carrying this book around and reading it closely. Remembering with deep sorrow the painful events in schools in 2023, I realized that teachers need to prepare themselves emotionally if they are to live alongside students for many years. The case-based format is easy to read, and the exercises between sections make it a good book to pause and think about. I am also looking forward to the author’s upcoming books on classroom management and teaching skills. Every homeroom teacher

As the layout suggests, this book works like a manual. Soon after it arrived, I received an unusually large number of calls from parents. Each time, I checked the table of contents, found a similar situation, and read before holding a consultation or responding to the complaint. It was very helpful to be able to open it whenever I needed something without starting at the beginning.

The first anniversary is approaching. I need to write this review, and the anniversary of Seoi Elementary School may be one reason this book came into the world. Becoming a teacher is a dream people work hard to make real, and finally achieving it brings great joy. But schools bring many responsibilities beyond educating and guiding children, including relationships with all the people involved in school life. Parent complaints can exhaust teachers physically and emotionally, make them doubt

This book brings together the author’s own experiences and many cases the author encountered while interviewing and advising teachers. Conversations with parents who file complaints cannot be solved with a simple “say this in one situation, that in another.” They are difficult. Teachers and parents each have their own perspectives and each may feel hurt by the other. “After all those years of thinking, I wish I could have handed this book to the teachers who came to me and said, ‘Try this.’ I

Even reading this book helps comfort the emotional wounds teachers carry. I believe it can help any teacher who has been struggling alone.

I recommend this book to everyone, not only teachers. I am quiet and introverted, and I find it hard to say no because I dislike making the atmosphere uncomfortable. I can read other people’s feelings, but I am not good at expressing my own. I have realized that many teachers also struggle to say no. “I’ll just put up with it; I don’t want things to get awkward” is common among people who dislike making others uncomfortable. They stay silent when someone says something unfair, hoping someone

The solutions the author offers moved me, and I felt like an Avenger as I read. Thank you for including kindergarten settings too. This book gives clear, warm guidance for a school environment that is becoming more challenging. It feels as though this book has given me the strength and shield to respond boldly to complaints at work. Thank you for explaining wise responses, why apologizing automatically is not always the right solution, and how to address different kinds of complaints. It is a

Recommended for: One of the greatest challenges teachers face is communicating with parents. Their cooperation is essential to helping children grow. I recommend this book to anyone wondering how to explain a teacher’s intentions clearly or respond to parents who make inappropriate demands or comments, especially new and early-career teachers. What makes this book special: It contains the know-how of a teacher with 27 years of experience. Rather than theory alone, it offers real experiences,
