"Idioms and Historical Anecdotes" is a course that involves reading passages from historical texts describing the origins of well-known idioms. Focusing primarily on the *Records of the Grand Historian* (*Shiji*) and the *Book of Han* (*Hanshu*), the course also features a diverse selection of texts from various other historical works, including the *Commentary of Zuo on the Spring and Autumn Annals* (*Chunqiu Zuoshi Zhuan*), *The Language of the State* (*Guoyu*), *Strategies of the Warring States* (*Zhanguo Ce*), the *Book of the Later Han* (*Houhanshu*), the *Records of the Three Kingdoms* (*Samgukji*), and the *Book of Jin* (*Jinshu*). These prose pieces, which recount the progression of historical events and the exploits of historical figures, offer a reading pleasure distinct from that of literature or philosophy. While literature enriches the sensibility and philosophy awakens wisdom, historical texts guide us to the scenes of the intense lives of historical figures who possessed such sensibility and wisdom.
