I picked it up casually, but the content was more helpful than I expected. It would be wonderful if I could put the book's advice into practice just as it's written.
Not one piece of advice feels disposable. I think my life would have changed a lot if I'd known this in my early teens. Recommended if you want strength to shape and sustain yourself.
Kim Ok-rim: Schopenhauer's cool-headed advice
Just as young people drawn to nihilism in the 19th century discovered Schopenhauer, people today, drawn to nihilism by economic inequality, are turning to him again. Reading his many works, we often find ourselves nodding because his words sound like advice for our own times. His sharp observations are realistic and direct. Even though nearly 200 years have passed, his words still sound perfectly contemporary. Rather than a remote philosopher who studied and wrote about profound ideas, he can feel like a familiar neighbor or an eccentric but sincere senior. In this age of fierce competition, people who will do anything to become like someone they think is better often lose their individuality by straining to imitate others instead of developing their own abilities and living on their own terms. They may resort to shortcuts and hurt others to cover their shortcomings. In the end, they can fall into a vicious cycle of earning money to be happy and becoming more unhappy. This book selects passages from Schopenhauer that can help us today, pairing them with reflections drawn from his thought and philosophy and the author's own experience. It also includes anecdotes and sayings from sages, philosophers, artists, and scholars across eras and cultures to make the ideas easy to understand. Keeping these lessons in mind and putting them into practice little by little can be a great help in life.
