This book is short, at just over 200 pages, but it contains an extraordinary amount. First, it shares real examples of ecological approaches to mission being practiced in an age of climate crisis. Second, it explains why the Korean church, as it is now, focuses so heavily on saving souls and lacks the power to transform life in the present. Third, it offers examples of how Christians can bring their professional expertise together with their Christian faith and live integrated, whole lives.
Kim Ki-dae: Asking through mission, answering through life
The Red Sea Diving Resort is a film based on the true story of an operation to bring Falasha refugees from Ethiopia to Israel. They still practice Judaism in Ethiopia. During the operation, Kabede, the local leader helping with the escape, is seriously injured. He is urged to flee to Israel for treatment and resume the operation afterward, but he refuses, saying, ‘For me, this mission is not a mission. It is life.’ Kabede expresses the heart of this book. For the Israeli intelligence officer who is the film’s protagonist, it is a mission; for the local leader Kabede, it is life. In the same way, what is a mission to missionaries is life to local people. Churches and mission organizations try to answer mission with mission, but the world wants life. This is a true story, told like a film, about a life in rural Cambodia among the poor, where questions about mission are answered through ecology, the economy, education, and community.
