Description

Taiwan has many museums covering distinctive and varied subjects. This book selects 11 museums in Taipei and central Taiwan with especially characteristic themes and explores them in depth through an expert's perspective. Readers can learn about the diverse histories and cultures of Indigenous peoples, visit earthquake sites and hot springs rich with the smell of chicken manure, pass the Shang king's zoo, and encounter imaginative creations straight out of a fairy tale. At times, the book traces people's lives by speaking with the dead, and looks back at an unhappy history through the will of someone who should not have died. Its aim is to help readers experience museums as living places full of stories and meaning, rather than simply walking a route through exhibits, and to serve as a bridge for exchange between visitors and artifacts.

I'm very interested in museums because I love historical artifacts. True to its title, this book steps outside the usual museum framework and is written so accessibly that it feels like an easy tour of the sights. It was a pleasure to read and never felt burdensome.

I bought this to read with my daughter before our trip to Taiwan. Seeing a place with some background knowledge makes a big difference. My daughter and I enjoy food-focused trips, but understanding Taiwan's culture through this book made the trip much more meaningful. I don't usually leave reviews, but I wanted to express my gratitude to the author. A niece who lives nearby is borrowing it now before her own trip to Taiwan in a little while.

I've only visited Taiwan as a tourist, and I was so glad to learn that it has all kinds of museums. The detailed explanations, photos, and historical background make this book wonderful!

I bought this book because it covers the themes of 11 distinctive museums in Taiwan, expecting a light read. But the detailed explanations and photos drew me in, and I ended up reading it closely! I haven't been to Taiwan yet, but the book inspired me to go. It has such varied, useful travel information. I recommended it to someone I know, and they loved it too.

I often travel to Taiwan. I only knew about the National Palace Museum, so I found this book introducing such distinctive museums really interesting. I enjoyed learning about Taiwan's history, and the many photos made everything easy to understand. I recommend reading it before your trip if you're planning to visit Taiwan.

I highly recommend this to anyone planning a trip to Taiwan or interested in the country. Every museum has a story that brings it to life, so visiting museums during a Taiwan trip sounds meaningful and fun. It would also be nice to visit the Hot Spring Museum on a hot-springs trip.
