Writing that challenges your thinking; the lively and confident energy of the older sisters fills this book.
I heard about it on Yeodultok and then read it. It really gave me a lot to think about, and at moments when I saw their wonderful appearances and mindsets, I even got goosebumps.
A book that tells us there are stories unique to disabled women, without lumping them together as disabled people. As they are, older sisters who use wheelchairs explore the world anew every day.
I was a subscriber to the mailing list! Gureumnim, this piece is so much fun too. I hope more people read this interview series and that another book like it comes out. This book overflows with Gureumnim's wit and warm conversations. I recommend it~
Kim Ji-woo: Our striding is not a luxury
Item 1: 'I want to hear loads of stories from older sisters who use wheelchairs!' — A disabled woman in her twenties interviews disabled women from their teens to their sixties — An essay collection of wheelchair users and words passing the baton with a lively rhythm. YouTuber Gureumnim, who shared the hope that 'I wish there were more stories about young disabled women' with I Have So Much to Say, and I Roll, has returned two years later with an interview collection. Our Walk Is No Luxury began with a mailing service she planned under her real name, Kim Jiwoo, with the personal wish, 'I want to hear loads of stories from older sisters who use wheelchairs!' Many subscribers responded to the introduction saying it contained stories of disabled women of different generations in the letter 'Curious about the stories of older sisters.' Following the stories of Yoo Jimin, Joo Seonghee, Hong Seoyun, and Park Daon, the book adds the previously unpublished stories of Jeon Yoonsun and Kim Hyoseon. From teenagers to people in their sixties, from girls to grandmothers, it is full of the courage, humor, wisdom, and vitality of wonderful women. Many women who use wheelchairs appear in this book. Both the interviewer, who leads the conversation in a lively rhythm moving between question marks and exclamation points, and the interviewees, who create new ripples between breaths, are disabled women. The book itself is therefore a relay race between wheelchairs and words. Writer Kim Jiwoo has a mother and a younger sister, but they are not disabled, so she often felt disappointed whenever she encountered points in her life's path where it was difficult to share the same concerns. A body that is a woman with a disability and a person with a disability who is a woman. If you try to understand the circumstances as either one or the other, or as one plus one of both, something is always missing.
