Description

*Reading and Learning Poetry* examines poetry education from the perspective of a teacher. While scrutinizing the value of poetry, this book explores how to read and teach it. Based on the belief that poetry education must begin with the value of poetry, it places this value at the forefront and covers in detail the educational function of poetry, poetic imagination, methods of reading and speaking poetry, the teaching and learning of rhythm, the qualities and structure of textbook poems, the content of poetry education, and methods of teaching poetry. It is a substantial volume. It was compiled by organizing various papers published in academic journals, research conducted during doctoral studies, and insights gained from teaching students in the field. This book has several distinctive features. It elaborates on the value of poetry through literary works and classifies types of poetic imagination by closely focusing on the imagination that is absolutely involved in literary creation. Paying attention to rhythm, which is a challenge in poetry research and education, it examines the factors and effects of rhythm formation to propose teaching methods for poetic rhythm. It presents selection criteria for poems included in textbooks and examines the hierarchy of textbook poems while considering the developmental characteristics of learners. A poetry lesson method was devised to cultivate learners' reason and sensibility by presenting logical reading, empathetic reading, and imaginative reading as ways to read poetry.
