Kim Hyun-joo: The homeland of an independence activist

This book is a compilation of three distinct volumes that appear similar yet distinct in nature: *Our Provisional Government*, *Wandering the Line of Death*, and *Youth of the Frozen Land*. They respectively serve as an introduction to the Provisional Government, an account of the escape of student soldiers, and an autobiographical novel. The author is Yun Jae-hyeon (who passed away in the United States in 1994), the editor's maternal uncle and a former student soldier in the Korean Liberation Army. Born in 1920 in Hoeryong, North Hamgyong Province, he was an English literature student who studied abroad at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan, after completing high school. Along with Kim Jun-yeop and Jang Jun-ha, the author was one of the trio who led 33 former student soldiers to publish the magazine *Deungbul* (The Lamp). Jang Jun-ha was particularly fond of Yun Jae-hyeon's short stories, even going so far as to remark that they were of an astonishing quality. The author led a successful life as a scientist, but his life also bore fruit in the three books compiled here.
