Description

An estimated 6% of people worldwide live with depression—a considerable number given a global population of around seven billion. Yet for a long time, depression, like other mental illnesses, has faced social ignorance, avoidance, and discrimination. People with depression are often wrongly seen as lacking willpower, concentration, or social skills, and many do not receive proper treatment. Depression and Bipolar Disorder: A Struggle is a memoir by Hyunju Kim, a doctor of law who has lived with chronic depression and bipolar disorder for 36 years. She has never given up: while struggling through illness, she has helped others and spread kindness, finding a meaningful way to live. Depression and bipolar disorder are difficult to treat quickly, and their symptoms can greatly diminish daily life. Social prejudice still makes patients’ lives harder. Realizing she could not recover in a short time, the author accepted reality and herself, then rebuilt her life around bipolar disorder and began creating new meaning. She became active as a childcare provider, caregiver, babysitter, elder-care worker, and domestic helper, sharing kindness through service.

People are doing their best to make their way through these turbulent times... Who could believe everyone is healthy and happy? We all carry pain, sadness, and hardship, and surely it is hard just to get through each day. Maybe we barely hold on, finding our own way to breathe, like a diver who works underwater holding their breath and then comes up with a long exhale... Reading A Struggle with Bipolar Disorder and looking into the author’s life, I found this struggle beautiful: turning inner

Bipolar disorder can produce traits at opposite extremes, almost like multiple personalities, and is very difficult to control. Even so, rather than letting illness rule her helplessly, the author has kept making varied efforts over many years. Even if she cannot fully recover, she refuses to give up hope and struggles to live on her own terms. Fighting her own illness must be difficult enough, yet her generous kindness toward others is deeply moving. I’m cheering her on and hope her story
