I am purchasing this to welcome the Year of the Tiger.
Since it is the Year of the Tiger, I bought this book as a gift, as I had my eye on it for a while. I was surprised to see that it is still being published even though it was released quite a long time ago. I am looking forward to it because the content seems interesting. The recipient loved it. I think I should buy one for myself as well.
It was a book I really wanted to own, and I finally bought it.
Kim Ho-geun et al.: Korean tiger
Since ancient times, Koreans have grown up listening to folktales about tigers and have always enjoyed telling stories featuring them. They also frequently displayed paintings of tigers accompanied by magpies, using them to ward off evil spirits. Consequently, Korea has become a nation with unrivaledly outstanding tiger paintings and stories. The image of the tiger—referred to as the "King of Beasts" and the "Sangun" (King of the Mountains), and revered alongside the Mountain Spirits—holds a deep place in the hearts of Koreans. Furthermore, everyone resonates with the magnificent appearance of the real tiger and reveres its spirit. As a single folk theme, the volume of both the reality and imagination of the tiger is greater than any other, and it is significantly richer and more diverse than that of China or Japan. Along with outstanding paintings of tigers, this book comprehensively compiles all aspects of the real and imagined Korean tiger, ranging from beliefs and customs regarding tigers to their ecology, traditional Korean medicine, literature, and proverbs. Everything about the ‘tiger,’ a subject familiar to every Korean. It can be described as a trivia book on tigers that conveys the message of the Korean tiger.
