Kim Hae-young: Royal Protocols and Royal Events of the Joseon Dynasty

This book sheds new light on the recording format and composition of the Uigwe from a new perspective, accompanied by various illustrations. It focuses on the fact that the Uigwe, which contains rich information regarding the royal culture of the Joseon Dynasty, served as a state record concerning royal ceremonies and was a document related to the Dogam system unique to the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties. It is the third volume in Hyeonamsa’s "Royal Culture Series," which is planned as a seven-volume set. The Uigwe of the Joseon Dynasty, inscribed as a UNESCO Memory of the World in 2007, is one of the representative records of the Joseon era. However, research books and guidebooks on the Uigwe of the Joseon Dynasty describe them as books concerning "rituals" or "etiquette." Furthermore, they introduce the reason for leaving behind records such as the Uigwe as being deeply related to the Confucian culture of the Joseon Dynasty, which placed great importance on rituals. Of course, since the Uigwe is a documentary cultural heritage left by the Joseon Dynasty, it must be related to Confucian rituals in some way; however, viewing the Uigwe merely as a record concerning Confucian rituals does not constitute a proper understanding of the Uigwe. The first thing to consider when explaining what kind of book the Uigwe is is the Dogam system of the Joseon Dynasty. This is because the Uigwe is a record left by the Joseon Dogam system.
