Description

This book is a love letter to books from author Kim Gyeo-ul, who grew up alongside them. As its title suggests, it comes from someone who loves books deeply and wholeheartedly shares the joy of reading, enthusiastically spreading the word that reading is a fun, intellectual pastime. In a world where tens of thousands of books are published each year, news that the number of readers is shrinking appears every year too. Against that backdrop, it’s heartening to have Kim Gyeo-ul and her YouTube channel Winter Bookstore encouraging people to read. If you’ve ever wandered through a bookstore looking for something to read, or enjoy reading, you’ve probably heard of Winter Bookstore and Kim Gyeo-ul. Kim’s first book, The Joy of Reading, discusses the physical and intellectual nature of books, chats about all kinds of everyday subjects we encounter while choosing, buying, and reading books—from merchandise and delivery to the smell of books and fountain pens for copying passages—and explores the world connected to books. Before long, these stories draw readers into the pleasure of books, where they find comfort and make friends with books. The author says she finds immense joy not only in sharing and spreading the “joy of reading,” but also in watching people who weren’t close to books gradually grow interested in them. The Joy of Reading has been a steady seller since its 2018 release. This time it has been paired in a newly covered set with the author’s second book, Floating Among the Letters. Feel the excitement and fragments of thought from an author who published her first book in her twenties. “If the first virtue of a writer is diligence, the second is embarrassment.”

When I first encountered ebooks, I was thrilled. No matter how thick and heavy a book was, I could fit it all on a light e-reader. But strangely, it didn't feel satisfying to read. Reading is reading, so why did it feel different? As I tried to figure it out, I realized there was a pleasure in the physical object of a print book. I liked looking at the cover and touching it, and feeling the paper between my thumb and index finger and hearing the soft swish as I turned each page. Of course I

As a subscriber, I could feel my affection for and trust in Kim Gyeoul, the beloved booktuber whose work I read all the way through. I first came across Winter Bookstore while searching for something to read during a reading slump, and I've been a devoted fan ever since. And to think this is a book about books I love, and about one person's convictions and world—that's wonderful. I'm thrilled to have the chance to take such a close, detailed look at Gyeoul's bookshelf. It made me happy to

I guess the title had made me expect a certain kind of book. At first I was impatient, wondering why it wasn't getting to what I wanted to read about. But past the halfway point, I began to understand what kind of book the author wanted to write. It covers just about everything related to reading. The preface explicitly says it isn't a book about reading techniques or book reviews, but apparently I couldn't let go of that expectation. It does touch on reading techniques and reviews; they just

Sometimes I want to talk about books with a friend or someone I know. But there is no one around me who likes books or would talk about them with me. So I've joined a few Naver cafes where people discuss books. I visit now and then to read the little everyday posts about books. They may be small, ordinary stories, but in a space where people gather around books, they relate to one another and share their interests. When I saw The Joy of Reading and its subtitle, A Book That Makes You Want to

I still give all those books my respect and love. Page 9: I've had reading as a hobby since I was young, but I didn't become so immersed in it that it shaped my daily life until I was an adult. More precisely, it became a habit when I started a blog, and this is my third year. Time really flies. At first, I never expected to keep it up this long. I tend to give up quickly, so I thought it would be over soon. Reading led to many other things: putting into words the feelings and thoughts left

I saw a news statistic saying that very few people read print books in a year, and it made me realize there must be people who don't read even one. I wondered whether literacy is declining among adults as well as children. I also worried that if things continue this way, people might be swept along by popular opinion or someone else's claims without thinking them through philosophically. I wondered whether you could talk about the joy of reading with people who don't read. But maybe that's

The Joy of Reading. A few years ago, I happened to come across one of the author's videos on YouTube. It introduced a book, and I liked so many things about it: the author's voice and personality, the way she approached books, and her wealth of knowledge. For a while, I enjoyed watching the videos posted on her channel. Then life got busy, and I stopped keeping up with them. By chance, I came across this book and was glad to see the name, so I decided I had to read it. I picked it up and

I have a certain bias—perhaps not quite a bias—that a book given a fresh look in a revised edition or made into a hardcover is published with the confidence that readers have loved it or will love it. The author also says she prefers hardcovers for books she wants to keep and revisit over time, so despite their drawbacks, like their weight, hardcovers do seem special. In that sense, seeing The Joy of Reading meet readers again in a hardcover revised edition gives me a sense of the love readers

The Joy of Reading is a book that shows just how wonderful the pleasure of reading can be. Going beyond usefulness, it carefully and sincerely explains the joy and delight books bring and how they affect our lives. The episodes in the book show just how much the author loves books, how she has read them, and how she lives alongside them, inviting us to share in that life. Reading about the many joys of reading in this book made me look back on my own reading life. I do feel the joy of reading

I recently read The Joy of Reading, and now I’ve picked up this book about reading! For someone who had fallen into a reading slump, it felt like fate. I learned that this was Kim Gyeo-ul’s first book, which readers have steadily loved for six years. Why hadn’t I known about it then? Maybe the timing wasn’t right... People say we read books and find connection and comfort when the time is right, and this book made me understand what they mean. I want to find out for myself what the joy of
