Description

From an agricultural perspective, soil serves as a medium for crop growth and the foundation of agricultural production. Soil is a dynamic natural body formed and developed over long periods under the influence of climate, vegetation, and topography, utilizing weathered rock products as its parent material. The field of study that views soil as a natural entity is called pedology, while the discipline that studies it from the perspective of a material utilized for a specific purpose is called edaphology. In pedology, the primary subjects of research include factors involved in soil formation and development, formation processes, and soil classification; in contrast, in edaphology, the main subjects are properties related to the intended use and improvement methods to suit those purposes. However, the physical, chemical, biological, and mineralogical properties of soil not only significantly influence soil development but also have a crucial impact on the crops growing in agricultural soils. Therefore, general soil science does not distinguish between pedology and edaphology but treats them integrally. The purpose of this textbook is to help students understand the principles of increasing soil productivity by explaining the basic physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil and examining how these properties affect plant growth. Furthermore, it will enable students to acquire knowledge about the soil of their local area by explaining the processes of soil formation and development as well as soil classification, and by examining the characteristics of Korean soils according to land use.
