Description

“The end of life's lonely voyage: a story about freedom”—from the author's preface. A political science PhD who studied political thought suddenly set out to write about freedom. Freedom is a product of understanding, layered over time as freedom of becoming pushes aside freedom of being. The author sees life as political and says we face political choices at every moment. Choosing one thing means losing another; we may retreat or advance for the future. These choices set the course of our lives and bring responsibility. What is a choice, and what is the ontological freedom that makes it possible? After long reflection, the author suggests that the vast history of myth, religion, philosophy, science, feeling, and reason may be the story of a struggle for greater freedom. Religion, philosophy, and politics are ultimately struggles for freedom. The author's quiet but firm voice tells a story everyone seems to know but no one says aloud. Calling every effort to grasp what cannot be seen or held a trace of freedom took a fierce inner struggle, a willing dive into a small thought to excavate its meaning. That struggle began with a sudden voice of freedom and a flash of joy, so the author calls it “capturing freedom.” Readers expecting a crisp answer to “What is freedom?” may be disappointed. But for anyone willing to consider that freedom may be impossible to define as a single concept, this epistemological discussion of freedom's nature may be a welcome encouragement to seek their own freedom.

Systems oriented toward freedom divide and evolve in different ways as the balance between individuals and society shifts, dominant discourses change, and freedom becomes an ideology. Some preserve individual freedom while strongly emphasizing community; others combine strong individual power with social liberalism. Systems balancing individual freedom and social democracy may fall into division and chaos amid neoliberalism, while individual and public freedom can have their value distorted or

Isn't our life both the beginning and end of a journey toward greater freedom? I'm amazed that a concept that once felt so distant can be explained so clearly. The author's distinctive terms and explanations tied to real-world power relationships helped me grasp freedom's essence in a vivid, concrete way. If you lack self-confidence or want to rediscover your own solid roots, I'm sure this will help more than any self-help book.

The book contrasts individual freedom (thought, will, and action) with institutional freedom (being, becoming, and emergence), and systematically explains the evolution of the idea of freedom through myth, power, religion, reason, and existence. I doubt there is a better-organized book on freedom.

Everyone has a subjective view of freedom. How do we grasp it? I'm still reading, and I love feeling my intellect and cultural understanding grow. I recommend this book. If you want to grasp freedom in moments when life becomes political...!!!
