Kim Dong-hoon: The political economy of development and aid
Planned by Korea University's Institute of Political Studies, this tenth volume in its Political Studies series examines international inequality in the twentieth century and how the international community responded, in order to explore how we should respond to the rapid changes unfolding today. The recent arrival in our society of artificial intelligence and automation, products of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, resembles conditions in the nineteenth century. We need serious debate and reflection on what to think and do now. Chapter 1 introduces development in general and presents arguments about why we should care about less-developed countries. Chapter 2 discusses political explanations for why poor countries are poor. Chapter 3 analyzes international development cooperation and official development assistance from developed countries to less-developed countries. In the twenty-first century, populations are aging, while artificial intelligence and automation are spreading. These conditions call for development politics and policies different from those of the past. The realities of aging and industrial automation demand new approaches from developed, developing, and less-developed countries alike. South Korea, which transformed itself through remarkable economic development from a recipient to a donor of international development cooperation, occupies a unique position in the international community as a successful example. Let's use this book as an opportunity to reconsider our approach and role in international development cooperation as inequality grows at home.
