Kim Bowon et al.: Understanding English-speaking Countries (26-1 semester, workbook included)
This book aims to provide a general understanding of representative English-speaking countries. With the expansion of globalization, English has long solidified its status as a global language; consequently, understanding major countries where English is the mother tongue has become paramount, whether for adapting to or overcoming globalization. This is because the study of an individual language and the social and cultural background surrounding it are inextricably linked. In this book, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, and Australia were selected as the subjects of study. The UK, the leading nation of the English-speaking world, and Ireland, a neighbor with close historical ties to the UK, were included. Canada and Australia were included because they are nations that gained independence from British colonies, have a majority British population, and currently enjoy a certain international status politically and economically. The UK, Canada, and Australia also share the commonality of being major members of the Commonwealth. However, the United States, a representative English-speaking country, was excluded from this book on the grounds that it requires separate, independent research. The book is structured to begin with an overview and history of each country, then expands its scope to the fields of politics, economy, society, and culture, attempting a comprehensive understanding.
