Kim Bong-gyu: The Upright Official Gwak An-bang and the 12 Memorial Shrines of the Hyeonpung Gwak Clan

Solnye Village in Hyeonpung-eup, Dalseong-gun, Daegu, was established approximately 600 years ago. The village's founding ancestor—that is, the very first person to settle and live here—was Gwak An-bang. He also coined the village name, "Solnye" (meaning "following propriety"). His wish was for all the residents to become people who strictly observe etiquette and fulfill their human duties. At the entrance to the village stands a fairly large reservoir (Yongheungji), and by its edge is a small grove containing ancient zelkova and pagoda trees. In that grove, a large natural stone stands inscribed with the words "Chung-hyo-se-eop" (Loyalty and Filial Piety as a Generational Business) and "Cheong-baek-gaseong" (Integrity and Honesty as a Family Reputation). This is a teaching to make loyalty and filial piety the family legacy passed down through generations, and to ensure that integrity and incorruptibility become the family's reputation. This teaching is a virtue that Gwak An-bang adopted as his philosophy of life and practiced throughout his lifetime. And this teaching was passed down from generation to generation to future generations.
