Katherine Hibbs: Critical Thinking and Strategic Information Production
In 2009, one of the authors gave a lecture at a famous business graduate school on the value of using structural analysis techniques for corporate management analysis. He started off with a discussion of how to save time while improving the quality of the analysis report, roughly by taking an overview. Analysts can organize available information by writing outlines or sketching or drawing charts, develop key contexts of the subject, and make it easier to understand the lack of knowledge. The simple task of investing in just a few minutes saves you a few hours or days of effort than if you were to come on the phone. The author thought that, for example, he could avoid general intellectual errors, as well as large data failures, by simply showing us how to use structured analysis, such as key home checks. The amazing thing was that only about one third of the students said they were prepared for an overview before they wrote the report. This was not unusual. We asked the same question to new analysts who enter government agencies on different occasions, and more than half of them said they would not pre-skew or outline their report projects. The development of powerful Internet search engines has changed the reporting process. The method of popularizing the students is to use search engines to find information or documents on topics, select the best source and then copy and paste the best parts and edit them into final reports.
