Karyn Harvey: Trauma hidden behind problematic behavior
All humans live through a variety of traumas. Trauma can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime. The negative experiences we experience in everyday life can be traumas to others, even minor ones. The same is true of the intellectual disabled. Even what we see as no big deal, the intellectual is able to display a variety of behavioral problems with large and small psychological reactions that are not self-repairable. Although from the outside it seems that the problem behavior of the mentally disabled person is inadvertent and has to be corrected, deep down, it is not a deliberate act but rather a survival response that is actually struggling to get out of the situation or to live. Despite long interventions in behavioral ways, I became interested in trauma as I met a developmental disabled person who still showed signs of challenge and problem behavior. Because internalization and externalization, which are shown by the problem behavior of the developmental disabled, were so similar to trauma-based reactions. He then read and studied various books and papers on trauma, participated in seminars and workshops on trauma. Even at the special educational site, it was recognized that a change in view of problem behavior was necessary and was encountered in the process. The book covers the actual experience of author who, for over 30 years, consulted behavior analysts and clinical specialists on behavior issues of intellectual and developmental disorders. The cause of the various failures, specific experiences and examples that he experienced while providing positive action support on various sites, we learn a lot.
