Karl Polanyi: The Kingdom of Dahomey and the Slave Trade
Paulani rejects the step-by-step idea that human economy is developing from primitive or natural economies into increasingly developed market or capitalist economies. That is, it's not a matter of setting up a post-op relationship between the various economic types found in many different societies. In the Hodda-Yang and slave trade, Paulani sets up three loose times, the precipitous-resistant period throughout the history of the human economy, and presents an interesting concept of the 'Extreme Economy' as a middle form of economy. But as he admits, this use of terms is a risk of being reduced to a circulatory theory that depends on each other if there's no explicit definition to make it clear.
