Kang Pyeong-gi: How Russia Became an Empire: Peter the Great's Reforms 1
How was the Russian Empire born? How did it become a great power? How was the empire governed and developed? This book explains the principles by which Russia, once a frontier region, became central to Europe and an empire. It tells the story of the great national reforms of Peter the Great (1672–1725), who stood at the center of the empire’s birth. The book presents, as illustrated material, original sources from more than 300 years ago: his handwritten letters, personal notebooks, passport used during his European inspection tour, shipbuilder’s certificate issued by the East India Company, wills of the Russian imperial family, imperial emblems, and the empire’s first map. The French Enlightenment thinker Voltaire (1694–1778) praised him: “Peter’s reforms accomplished in just 50 years what other countries would struggle to achieve even in 500.” The modern historian Ranke (1795–1886) assessed him as “a genius with passionate and great ideas, as can be seen from Peter’s diary. He was perfectly conscious of his goal that Russia should become a hegemonic power.” Why did Peter the Great reform the state? What preparations did he make? Who were his fellow reformers, and who planned the reforms? What were their key contents, difficulties, and results? This book answers these questions. Because the author carefully explains historical facts from 18th-century Russia by deciphering original sources, readers will easily understand how Russia became a modern state and an empire.
