Kang Myung-kwan et al.: Translator's Note: Gabo 1
This book, *Translated and Annotated Song Scores* (1), is a translation of 25 types of song scores, ranging from *Cheonggu Yeongeon* to *Daedong Pung-a*. Of course, not all of the song scores were translated; only the parts recorded in Chinese characters were translated, excluding the works (most of which are Sijo). Since song scores are basically intended for singing, they contain various additional information necessary for singing. It goes without saying that the literary materials attached to the song scores are invaluable resources for the study of the forms and changes of vocal music in the Joseon Dynasty, as well as for the study of music history and music thought. Of course, most of the materials translated here have already been introduced to the academic world. However, it is true that because it was written in Classical Chinese and was riddled with disordered text and typographical errors, it was difficult to read easily, and consequently, it was difficult to accurately grasp the entire content. I hope this translation will be of at least some help in understanding the family tree and the history of Korean vocal music.
