Juan Ramón Jiménez: Platero and I
*Platero and I*, a collection of prose poems by Juan Ramón Jiménez, the 1956 Nobel Prize winner in Literature. It is the 59th book in the "Eul-yu World Literature Collection," an authentic world literature series revived after 50 years. Rated as the most outstanding work of prose poetry in 20th-century Spanish literature, *Platero and I* is also referred to as an "Andalusian elegy" or an "autobiographical lyric." It conveys the beauty of the author's hometown of Moguér and vividly recreates the historical, social, and cultural climate of early 20th-century Spain. This book includes the beautiful *Selected Poems by Jiménez* alongside *Platero and I*. When dividing the author's creative process into two periods, this work concludes the first while fully capturing the characteristics of the second. It clearly demonstrates the hallmarks of Jiménez's prose, such as long, melodic sentences, rich insertions and metaphors, free modulation of sentence rhythm, free and flexible syntax, impressionistic narration that maximizes expressiveness, and the use of poetic imagery. At the end of the 19th century, he sublimated the theme commonly known as the ‘Spanish Question,’ a chronic problem of the fallen Spain, into prose poetry.
