Ju Jo-mo: Songsa 300

"The Song of the Free People, *Songsa Sambaeksu*" is a compilation of Songsa, which, along with Tang poetry, constitutes the core of Chinese poetic literature. It is a selection of Songsa works by representative Songsa writers compiled by the Qing Dynasty historian Zhu Zhaomou. "Sa" refers to poetry composed to musical melody, specifically designating the lyrics of a song. Songsa was widely loved by people ranging from the gentry at the top to ordinary commoners at the bottom; it was a type of song enjoyed in a relatively free manner, free from the constraints of etiquette. From the 300 poems in the first edition, Zhu Zhaomou selected only 283 poems—excluding those deemed incomplete in content and form—to publish a revised edition. This book transcribes these 283 poems from the revised edition, adding annotations and interpretations. By including works not only by representative Songsa writers but also by other authors active in the literary circles of the Song Dynasty, it helps readers understand the overall evolution of Songsa.
