Joseon Dynasty Annals Translation Team: Sapil
The Annals contain not only the details of events and disputes but also subjective opinions, such as views on official appointments and evaluations of figures during their lifetime or after their death; these are known as *saron*, which begin with phrases like "The historian says" or "The historian does not say." The inclusion of *saron* is a key characteristic of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, and it is difficult to discuss the intrinsic value of the Annals without mentioning them. Over 3,400 instances of *saron* are recorded in the Annals of the early Joseon period alone, and research analyzing these works indicates that approximately 57% consist of commentaries on historical figures. This book was planned to examine the essential value of the Annals through the lens of *saron*. Composed of two parts, Part 1 features *saron* commentaries that comment on various matters within the Annals, while Part 2 covers the history of the historians and the Annals themselves.
