Jo Yoon-kyung: Surrealism and the Imagination of the Body

This book contains research on the body by French Surrealist poets. It illuminates the theme of the body through the poetic adventures of Eluard, Desnos, and Péret, in connection with fellow painters including René Magritte and Paul Delvaux. *Surrealism and the Imagination of the Body* reveals why the body occupies the core of Surrealist aesthetics and what artistic intentions it embodies, clarifying Surrealist characteristics through the types of pictorial images of the body. Additionally, it includes approximately 73 artworks related to the body to facilitate understanding. Describing the Surrealists' exploration of the body, it discovers infinite potential and ambiguity from the imperfect body that is endlessly preparing for rebirth. Furthermore, by constantly questioning the conventional forms of the body and the old order of aesthetics, it presents a method for seeking the self and the world from a new perspective that transcends the everyday view. This book is a Korean translation and compilation of the author's doctoral dissertation, "The Writing of the Body in Surrealist Poetry (Eluard, Desnos, Péret): Toward Super-Corporeality."
