Description

The Newbery Medal, with a 100-year history, is called the “Nobel Prize of children’s literature.” A new book, 35 Newbery Must-Reads, has been published, carefully selecting and introducing excellent books that won a strong response from readers among more than 450 past Newbery winners. Famous for their well-crafted stories and delicate, beautiful prose and vocabulary, Newbery books have not lost their value over time and are widely read by children around the world. In Korea, they are often selected as debate and writing texts or required school reading. Reading Newbery winners is even considered a first step toward preparing for entrance exams. Prestigious private elementary schools and international middle schools even offer and run original-English reading classes. The reason people are eager to read Newbery winners is clear: they can reliably build literacy skills, which are essential for doing well across all subjects, including Korean, writing, and debate. Their outstanding sentences and vocabulary can strengthen vocabulary, their well-built stories from diverse backgrounds help readers develop the habit of reading at length, and their deep subjects—from racism to human cloning—can raise the level of reading. Yet parents often worry, “Everyone says they’re good, but they’re hard to actually read.” 35 Newbery Must-Reads is a welcome book for parents and teachers who hesitate because they don’t know where to start or how to approach the books. It brings together Newbery must-reads children should read at each stage, matched to their age and reading level.

The Newbery Medal, called the Nobel Prize of children’s literature, has been around for more than 100 years, and there are now over 450 winning books in its history. Newbery winners can be thick and seem difficult to read, so it’s easy to hesitate before picking one up. Author Jo Yeon-ho says today’s young people should definitely read Newbery winners, for four reasons: first, they help readers develop a broad perspective as global citizens; second, they improve literacy and critical thinking;

It’s helpful to have the background information and summaries about the Newbery winners organized so well.

Books are always good friends to me. Through protagonists facing conflicts similar to my own, I find comfort and gain constructive ideas. That’s what it means for a book to become a friend. Newbery winners, called the Nobel Prize of children’s literature, can become good friends to young readers. The Newbery Medal marked its 100th anniversary in 2022 and has produced more than 450 works if Newbery Honor books are included. The award is for children and teens, but some people say the books can

A list of books every elementary school student should read: 35 Newbery Must-Reads. A child who has regularly looked at picture books from an early age loves books and often reads independently. Because picture books were familiar, I worried it might be hard to move on to chapter books. I let my child try picture books with more text and watched their reaction. Seeing them enjoy the books without feeling burdened made me think I could offer them books without pictures. By regularly reading

The Nobel Prize of children’s literature with a 100-year history: the Newbery Medal! I know Newbery winners are good books, but I think this is a very helpful guidebook for parents and educators who feel overwhelmed about which of the many winners to start with and how to have children read them. From among more than 450 past Newbery winners, this book carefully selects and introduces 35 works that children and teens should read now. ⭕️ Why should we read Newbery winners now? Newbery books help

I bought it because I thought it would help with my child’s reading education. I like it because it seems to live up to my expectations. I think it would also make a nice gift for someone.
