Description

Bartholomew Bruguière may be an unfamiliar name, but Bishop Bruguière volunteered for the mission to Joseon despite the obvious dangers and helped the Vatican formally establish an apostolic vicariate. He was appointed its first apostolic vicar, and died just before reaching the border on his way to Joseon. Learning about Bishop Bruguière gives us a chance to understand the roots of our faith and reflect on our faith today. “To go to Joseon as the first apostolic vicar during the time of persecution meant embarking on a path of martyrdom, putting one’s life on the line. At that time, Bishop Bruguière answered the request by saying, ‘I will go.’ … Please enter the story of a righteous man who delivered a message of hope, in Learning About Bishop Bruguière.” — From the recommendation by Archbishop Jeong Sun-taek of the Archdiocese of Seoul

Bishop Bruguière loved Korea and the Korean people. Through this book, we can learn how many precious things he did for us. Through him, we can also naturally learn how to love our neighbors. I highly recommend it.

When I first received the book, I thought it was thinner than expected for a biography and included photos, a timeline, and notes, so I could finish it in a couple of hours. But it took longer to read than I expected, and writing the review took even more time. (I first wrote at length because I wanted to explain the greatness of the bishop’s spiritual legacy, then cut it down because it might discourage people who wanted to buy and read the book. Still, nothing feels sufficient.) Throughout

When I first saw the title Learning About Bishop Bruguière, I worried that although the book was not thick, its content might be too difficult for me to read without much knowledge of Catholicism or theology. My worry proved unfounded: the book is substantial, offers many visual materials, and is written clearly and concisely so anyone can read it easily. Even with my short attention span, I was able to finish it in one sitting. I would divide the book into two broad parts: a biography and a

This is a good religious book that gives a detailed account of Bishop Bruguière’s devotion and sense of mission.
