Description

South Korean small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often lack capital, manpower, and support. Their harsh reality is dire, as they struggle not only to achieve success but even to establish themselves domestically. However, there are SMEs that have captivated the world with their unique success strategies and brands. *Brands, Swallowing the World* examines the differentiated strategies of 13 "strong" Korean companies that enabled them to successfully enter and succeed in the global market through their case studies. This book categorizes these 13 companies into five types—"Gradual Success," "Marketing Battle," "Triumphant Return," "High-Production Small-Batch Production," and "One-Person Venture"—and analyzes the success factors of each. For instance, since the steam cleaners and frying pans sold by Han Kyung Hee Living Science and Happycall are products where performance is more important than image, they achieved success through a strategy of investing boldly in certifications and patents to prove functionality, and intensively managing distribution channels where they could directly demonstrate those capabilities. Their success is not a coincidence, but the result of ceaseless challenge and hard work.

To summarize the book after finishing it, it feels like a "casebook of Korean 'hidden champions' that succeeded through branding." When I looked only at the title (without reading the small print inside), I assumed it would introduce leading global major brands. However, upon actually opening the book, I found it presented Korean examples—specifically, cases where minor brands were revitalized and succeeded. While I had encountered major examples many times during my undergraduate years,

What is the first thing you do when starting something new? Isn't it benchmarking? It involves finding best practices and learning what you can emulate. This book compiles marketing case studies from small and medium-sized enterprises—specifically, those that could be called "strong small businesses." I noticed that the companies featured in this book are more famous overseas than in Korea. Looking at the table of contents, I recognized four of them: Paseco, Han Kyung Hee Living Science,

Companies that are small in scale but strong are referred to as "strong small businesses" or "hidden champions." In South Korea, where the power of large conglomerates overflows, the job-seeking youth, public perception, and the power to become the so-called "bosses" of the economy are all gravitating toward these large corporations. In this context, what offers us new insights is the perspective on "hidden champions," specifically the stories of "small companies" that are exerting influence
