I learned about the book through Buddhist broadcasts, listened to the teachings, and bought it. It is easy to read and feels like having a conversation with the monk.
Venerable Jibeom's You Are Already a Perfect Person is comforting from its title alone. Compiled from the monk's practice and reflections, it encourages readers to escape the pressure of constantly proving themselves and recognize the value of simply existing. Jibeom: You are already a perfect person.
Among meditation practitioners, Bomunsa Temple and Bomunsa Seon Center in Sangdo-dong, Seoul, are a popular place for practice and rest, thanks to Venerable Jibeom. As abbot of Bomunsa and director of its meditation center, his life has been quite different from that of most monks. Monks who devote themselves to meditation are traditionally called ipan, while those who manage temple affairs and focus on teaching and outreach are called sepan. Venerable Jibeom is a rare practitioner who has taken on both roles. After becoming a monk in 1978, he spent more than 20 years devoted to meditation at monasteries around the country. He completed three intensive solitary retreats at Daejaam, Baekdamsa, and Jingwiam, and twice completed 100-day periods of intensive practice at Bongamsa and Gounsa. Those were demanding years that required a firm resolve to die on the meditation cushion. In 2000, the sudden death of his teacher changed his path. As a senior disciple, he had to become abbot of Bomunsa, moving from meditation to temple administration. Yet he never let go of his practice. He worked tirelessly to make Bomunsa a place of spiritual practice, and during winter and summer retreat seasons, with the congregation's consent, he would join other monasteries and return to life as a meditator. More than 40 years of sharing hardships and joys with fellow practitioners deepened their bonds. When exhausted meditators came to Seoul after retreat season, Bomunsa became a cozy refuge where they could rest.
