Description

This travel book presents, in chronological order, what the author saw, heard, and felt while traveling 3,000 kilometers across the Mongolian steppe with students over 12 days and 11 nights, visiting historical sites. One especially memorable feature is the QR codes in the text, which bring the trip to life. As readers follow the author's detailed explanations, they can trace Mongolia's deep cultural history and experience its beautiful natural landscape as it is. Across Mongolia, the country of the steppe, sheep, goats, horses, and cattle graze, while herders on horseback move among the flocks. Sometimes you can spot herds of yaks or camels too. Waterbirds play or fly along rivers and lakes, and if you're lucky, you may see swans. Hawks circle overhead to greet visitors and sometimes call out. White-felt gers and stone ovoo monuments form part of Mongolia's cultural landscape. Look more closely and you'll also see fortification ruins connected to Mongolian culture, stone khirigsuur burial and ritual sites from the Bronze Age, carved deer stones, Turkic ritual sites and stone figures, inscriptions, and Lamaist temples. An Archaeologist's Journey Through Mongolia offers a chance to step away from the busy routines of a rapidly changing modern life and feel at one with the vast nature of the Mongolian steppe. I hope this book helps readers find time to encounter themselves in the great outdoors, gain some breathing room in life, and spread their creative wings.

Ger camps, grasslands, sheep, and horses are the things that often come to mind when we think of Mongolia. With a warm perspective, the author recounts a trip to Mongolia while visiting historical sites. The more technical stories about the sites are covered in another book; as you follow this account, you can picture Mongolia for yourself.
