Jeong Im-sun: A Study on the Experiences of Aging Well Among Visually Impaired Elderly

Are visually impaired elderly people happy? To understand the reasons behind this question more deeply and with greater certainty, I began researching visually impaired elderly men and women. Just as my doctoral research showed that visually impaired elderly men fully experience aging well, this study, which serves as an extension of that research, also confirmed that visually impaired elderly people age successfully. Visually impaired elderly people possessed a unique essence of happiness. They were enjoying happiness in their later years by combining this unique essence with the essence of happiness found in non-disabled elderly people. Indeed, happiness in life is an internal matter, not an external one. I looked into their happiness and discovered its essence. This book is the very work that reveals those essences. I sincerely hope that this book, a modest result of my research on the well-aging of the visually impaired, will serve as a kind of gospel, spreading the message of happiness to the visually impaired. First, this book is significant in that it possesses academic distinctiveness by approaching the essence of aging well for the visually impaired elderly through a phenomenological qualitative research method that reveals the individuals' experiences as they are and deeply analyzes the meanings attributed to those experiences. Second, it holds the greatest significance in that it identifies the fundamental elements that enable the experience of aging well for the visually impaired elderly. Third, it is significant in that this text contributes, albeit modestly, as a cornerstone to research on aging well for the visually impaired elderly, and helps provide basic data for the establishment of welfare policies and support for aging well for the visually impaired elderly.
