I've always been interested in book design, so I enjoyed getting a glimpse into the thoughts of various designers.
I have long been interested in book design, but had no way to hear about the detailed process or stories behind the work. This book helped me a lot. Thank you.
I enjoyed getting a glimpse into the lives and hard work of book designers, whose experiences are not easy to encounter. This is a wonderful book that made me want to keep the medium of the book close, beyond design alone.
Jeon Ga-kyung: Dialogue on the unfolded page
A portrait of Korean publishing since the 2010s through books and design: interviews with Korean book designers. The visual culture researcher Jeon Ga-gyeong has published Conversations Across the Spread: Korean Book Designers Today, a collection of interviews she conducted, wrote, and edited after meeting eleven of Korea's most active book designers (eleven teams). The result of a two-year project begun in 2022, the book centers on conversations between the author and designers about books and design, with essays interspersed throughout that offer a rich account of the history of publishing and the forms books can take. The eleven practitioners work across in-house and freelance design, commercial and art publishing, and independent publishing, spanning different fields and language communities and showcasing distinct design methods. What brings them together is the printed book. Jeon Ga-gyeong, a design writer who researches graphic design and runs the publisher April Eye in Daegu, has long explored the relationship between images, text, and design through photobooks. Her aim here is not to decide what book design means in this era or hastily predict the future of books. Instead, with a deep appreciation for the designers she interviewed, she carefully traces their work and connects it to visual culture and design history, piecing together a history of contemporary Korean book design that has yet to be firmly established.
