Jean-Jacques Rousseau: New Eloise 2
Volume 56, *Nouvelle Héloïse*, Vol. 1 of the Western Series, *The Research Foundation of Korea Academic Masterpiece Translation Series*. This book marks the first complete translation in Korea of Rousseau's romance novel, *Nouvelle Héloïse*. This epistolary novel was begun by Rousseau in 1756 and published in 1761. Upon its initial publication in Paris, it received an enthusiastic response from readers, leading to a staggering 72 editions over 40 years. The novel adapts the romantic and sublime love story of Abelard and Héloïse, who actually existed in the Middle Ages. Set against the backdrop of beautiful nature, the love story between the female protagonist, Julie, and her governess, the male protagonist Saint-Preughan, unfolds through the letters they exchange. The work is composed of six parts. Through this book, Rousseau seeks to synthesize his philosophical ideas. Adhering to the specific forms of the fictional novel genre, it can be said to be connected to the spirit of Romanticism. The themes that can be considered the core of Rousseau’s thought—the problem of ‘nature,’ human nature, the problem of reason and sensibility, and human liberation from customs and institutions as well as self-realization—are concretized through a romantic love story.
