Jang Yun-su et al.: The Eastern Meaning of Teaching and Learning

This book examines the meaning of teaching and learning within Eastern thought. Specifically, it explores the role Eastern thought can play in solving contemporary educational issues and considers how its teachings can be applied and utilized in reality. Focus was placed on the aspirational significance of pedagogical ideals and educational philosophies rather than on curriculum and content. While the acts of teaching and learning are fundamentally part of the human socialization process, this book aims to present them in Eastern educational thought as a process of self-actualization leading to the "becoming of a true human being." The book consists of an "Introductory Essay" and three sections. First, a general overview is placed at the beginning to provide an overall perspective on the "Eastern meaning of teaching and learning." The "Introductory Essay" explores various characteristics of Eastern modes of thinking, particularly stipulating a shift in perspective regarding the East (East Asia) and a comparison of Eastern and Western modes of thought as prerequisites for understanding. Part 1 discusses the pedagogical ideals of Eastern thought and mind education. In Part 2, to practically understand the educational aspects of Eastern thought, Confucius’s education through questioning, Toegye Yi Hwang’s education of grandsons, Nammyung Jo Sik’s education of honesty, the adult education of the "Gentlewoman Among Women" Jang Gye-hyang, and the Buddhist education of the stick and shout were concretized as individual topics. Furthermore, in Part 3, the future significance of Eastern educational thought was explored from the perspective of doctrinal ideals and aspirational values. Jang Yun-su wrote the "Introductory Remarks" and Chapters 1, 3, and 4 of Part 1, as well as Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4 of Part 2, while Jeong Jae-geol authored Chapters 2 and 5 of Part 1, Chapter 5 of Part 2, and Chapters 1, 2, and 3 of Part 3. In this book, an intentional effort was made to differentiate the modes of thought of the East and the West.
