Description

The loss of family functions due to urbanization and the rise of nuclear families, along with materialism, have been raised as concerns, bringing the importance of parent education to the fore. People become parents when a child is born, but if they have not properly learned the role of parenthood, they may struggle and become confused as their child grows. Moreover, infancy is a critical period when the foundations of human development are formed. Despite declining birth rates, the proportion of infants and young children entering institutions at an early age continues to rise under policies supporting work-family balance and strengthening public childcare. As a result, caregiving is gradually shifting from parents to early-childhood education institutions, and parent education is increasingly moving toward programs conducted by those institutions. Consistent education at home and at the institution is also important. Institutions therefore have a growing role, capacity, and responsibility to provide parent education that spreads the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed during early childhood into the home. In response to this need, systematic parent education that supports children’s growth should be developed through surveys of what parents need. This book examines why parent education is necessary and the theories behind it, and presents examples of parent-education programs carried out in early-childhood education institutions. The cases were developed, researched, implemented, and applied by the authors over approximately one year. We hope that high-quality parent education at institutions that have close relationships with parents will become an important environment that supports parents’ ongoing growth and change.
