J. D. Payne: evangelism

J. D. Payne's *Evangelism* bears the subtitle, "Biblical Answers to Today's Questions." Based on the premise that "we learn through questions," the author addresses 33 questions using the fictional characters Roberto and Mark. These questions encompass not only the fundamental knowledge an evangelist must possess for evangelism but also the questions one will encounter in the field. The foundation upon which Professor Payne answers each question is rooted in the Reformed/Calvinist position rather than the Wesleyan/Arminian camp. However, Professor Payne states that he sought to address both perspectives as fairly and accurately as possible. The first section of questions covered in *Evangelism* addresses topics such as evangelism, the Gospel, repentance, saving faith, conversion, regeneration, salvation, the necessity of evangelism, and election. These are matters that the evangelist must know, believe, and be convinced of before the person being evangelized even approaches them. Should one preach even if they do not feel like it? Should one burden people? What if one makes a mistake? What should be done if one cannot memorize all the Bible verses? How should one handle those who do not wish to follow Jesus? It also addresses the attitude and role of the evangelist, such as, "What should I do if my actions when evangelizing are not like those of Jesus?" There are also questions that the person being evangelized might ask, and that the evangelist might also be curious about, such as, "What happens to those who have not heard the Gospel?" and "Where do children or people with intellectual disabilities go after they die?"
