Im Jeong-ja: Mom and I are half Chuseok

Volume 18 of the "Dalmaru: Our Stories in History," a series exploring exciting curiosity about our culture and history, is titled "Mom's Half, Me's Half: Chuseok Banbogi." The term "Banbogi" (half-meeting) was used because, when the two families lived far apart, they were arranged to meet at a midpoint between the parents' and husband's homes. In the Joseon Dynasty, a Confucian society, women were not permitted to stay overnight at their parents' homes, so they could meet their families at a scenic midway point. This book introduces Banbogi, a Korean Chuseok custom where mothers and children came in equal halves, allowing them to meet even during the busy holiday season.
