Description

*Berber Civilization: Rediscovering Islam and Africa Hidden by Western Centrism* is a book that covers the history and culture of the Berber tribes, an indigenous people of North Africa. How have the Berber tribes, who have served as a bridge connecting Mediterranean civilization with the African continent, influenced other civilizations? With numerous surrounding ethnic groups invading the Maghreb region and the constant threats they have faced, their unique traditions and customs—which they have barely managed to maintain as intermediaries—are stories rarely heard elsewhere. This book’s attempt to focus on the culture and history of these people, who have not been recognized as part of the mainstream, will serve as a message of support for all minorities. The endeavor of *Berber Civilization: Rediscovering Islam and Africa Hidden by Western Centrism* to focus on the culture and history of the Berber tribes, who have not been recognized as part of the mainstream, is a message of support for all minorities.

#1. I have never properly learned African history during world history class. It was merely a single lesson covered in one page of a workbook during my second year of high school. Aside from that, African history has been treated merely as that of a victim of Western imperialism. Although it is said that Africa blossomed with a culture even more prosperous than Europe before the modern era, when a Eurocentric world order was established, I know absolutely nothing about it. I am likely not alone

1. Recently, having entered graduate school, I have been reading books in my spare time amidst a somewhat busy schedule. I had already felt that my thought process had become quite rigid from reading only academic papers, but when I heard that Hangilsa was recruiting supporters, I decided to read this book with them. 2. This book tells the story of a tribe named Vermeer. As someone who had heard a little about the Vermeer tribe in world history, I breathed a sigh of relief that I hadn't

The Berbers have constructed their identity just as they define themselves as 'Imagigen' (free people). Although they live as a diaspora in foreign lands, they preserve their unique identity through their culture and customs. *Berber Civilization: The Rediscovery of Islam and Africa* was a beneficial book for readers to rediscover the Berbers and examine the process by which they formed their identity.:)

The most interesting and easy-to-read part was the “Berber Art and Food” section! While reading, I found myself wanting to try the combination of lamb (mechoui) and a carbonated drink. They say the quality of the meat is the best, to the point where no other meat can match its taste. Also, regarding henna, which I learned about today and has become a representative tourist product found at any tourist spot in Morocco, it is implemented in various ways depending on the Berber region. It is a

Beings who cannot be explained by either Mediterranean civilization or Arab-Islamic civilization. The Berbers are raising new questions regarding the communal identity of modern Africa. Since the Arab Spring, discussions on Berber identity have gained momentum. Where did they come from? How do they define themselves? If you wish to foster a new understanding of modern Africa, I recommend reading this book by Lim Ki-dae.

I was impressed by how the Berbers raised their voices in society to avoid losing their identity. It was helpful for understanding North Africa in general, along with Berber civilization. I highly recommend this book to anyone studying Africa.

This book comprehensively and in detail covers the civilizations of North Africa and the Arab world, which have long been overshadowed by Western civilization. By answering the questions posed by the author one by one, readers can kill two birds with one stone: gaining knowledge of "Berber civilization" and acquiring a foundation in the humanities. In particular, the question, "What is 'identity'?" remains the most memorable.

We all have our own precious stories. There is absolutely no reason to be ignored simply because we are not powerful or well-known. You must not lose your identity just because no one pays you attention. You must constantly recognize your existence and preserve your uniqueness. Then, someday, someone will recognize your story, just as the author of this book researched the ‘Berber civilization’ and shared it with us through this book.
