Im Cheol-il et al.: Understanding the Use of Remote and Cyber Education

While maintaining the chapter structure of the existing 2nd edition, this edition has been revised to reflect changes that have occurred over time. Ten years have passed since the publication of the 2nd edition, and the practice of distance education has changed significantly; in particular, the scope and level of application of distance education have increased rapidly over the past two years due to COVID-19. We decided to reflect these changes in this book. First, Chapter 1 of Part 1, "Conceptual Understanding of Distance Education," has been changed to present a conceptual definition of distance education by briefly illustrating a few practical examples, rather than simply listing examples. Chapter 2, "Historical Evolution of Distance Education," newly attempts to classify distance education into postal communication, broadcasting communication, and ICT-based distance education in terms of technology and ideology. Regarding domestic distance education, following the existing educational broadcasting, distance universities, and cyber universities, the section on the universalization of distance education has been added to reflect the experience of COVID-19 in 2020 following the era of e-learning. Chapter 3, "Theory of Distance Education," has been left unchanged. Part 2, "Development of Distance Education," reflects the technological changes and advancements over the past decade. First, in Chapter 4, Technology and Media of Remote Education, the use of intelligent information technology was added to reflect recent changes such as e-learning platforms, learning support, AI-based educational services, and the metaverse. Chapters 5 (Systematic Development of Remote Education), 6 (Design of Remote Education Curriculum), 8 (Operation of Remote Education), and 9 (Evaluation of Remote Education) were modified without major changes, considering that they are centered on concepts, theoretical models, and principles. Additionally, content regarding considerations for real-time remote education forms that have spread due to the COVID-19 pandemic was added.
