Description

The Right to the City is a concept developed by Henri Lefebvre, the 20th-century French philosopher, sociologist, rural scholar, urban studies researcher, and socially engaged thinker; it is also the title of this book. His influential work, which had a significant impact on urban issues at the time and was used as a protest slogan during the French May 1968 protests, was translated and published in Korea for the first time in 2024. Drawing on historical and philosophical insights into the changing city from ancient times through the Middle Ages and into the modern era, the author diagnoses how the use values once provided by cities were transformed through industrialization into exchange values that prioritize function, resulting in the deterioration of cities. The author further argues for an urban philosophy that views urban phenomena as a whole, rather than through a fragmented perspective that analyzes them with extreme rationalism. The “right to the city” he advocates is not simply the right to live in a city, but the citizen’s right to enjoy life in a city worthy of the name. It is close to a manifesto for a new humanist urban theory. Remarkably, this work, written around the time of the May 1968 student uprising in France, is in step with current urban policies proposed to address the problems embedded in modern cities.

It helped me a great deal. Thank you. This is a book everyone should read at least once in their life.

Who else could diagnose the formation and development of cities with as broad a perspective as Henri Lefebvre...?

Henri Lefebvre’s insights into the city don’t stop at the “city.” More broadly, they encompass society; more broadly still, systems; and, more narrowly, human beings themselves.

I’m planning to read it again. I recommend it to anyone interested in Henri Lefebvre.

I’m disappointed in several ways because I don’t think it helped as much as I expected. Still, it’s a book worth reading at least once. I think it might be easier to understand if you first study Henri Lefebvre through various papers and other materials.
