Henning Mankell: Anxious Paradise
Henning Mankel's novel, which is the great Swedish literary director who struggled to bring the suffering of Africans to the world by setting up a tradition of thriller literature. On the background of Africa's Mozambique, which lived a lifetime of time, one woman's life traces the history of civilization's savagery and hypocrisy that took place there a hundred years ago. In 2004, Hannah, a poor girl in Sweden, is swept across the distant sea into Africa. Leaving home to the coastal city, away from life-dominating cold and poverty, Hannah accidentally got a job as a cook on a steamship bound for Australia, where she married a fellow sailor on her journey to the unknown but was stopped in an African port to bury her husband with unannounced husband's death. Where she started to step was the port city of Lorenço Markes, east of Portugal. In the middle of the night, the hotel was accidentally hosted and was barely able to survive from a disease that had been known as an illness, which is actually a famous brothel. Hannah, who lived through the day without knowing why she should stay there or why she had to leave, was asked by the Portuguese owner of the brothel. As long as I was no longer willing to live alone in a troubled paradise, I married the brothel owner unlovablely but became a widow in a few months. It is a society where both blacks and whites lose face with fear of each other.
