Description

The history of female body shame, *The Secret Body*. Beginning with the cultural history of the shame women feel toward male doctors, this book covers shame regarding female genitalia from ancient times to the present. It convinces the reader that while the human feeling of shame regarding the body varies culturally and historically, it is not a phenomenon shared across cultures but rather a specific aspect of the overall human lifestyle. By utilizing diverse examples and literature spanning across various races from ancient times to the present, the book helps readers understand this difficult subject more easily.

It is not as difficult as I feared. It is easy to understand because it is rich in examples.

It's fun. I feel a bit self-conscious reading it on the subway, but it is definitely a clever and entertaining book.

An ambitious work by German cultural anthropologist Hans Dürfehr. This book presents discourses on the body by an author who overturns the theories of Eliade, a scholar unrivaled in this field. The shame inherent in the body is not much different even for tribes that live naked. This is because, despite living the life of Adam and Eve, they still make efforts to avoid revealing the parts they find shameful. Let us listen to Hans Dürfehr's discourse on the female body.

First, here are the characteristics of this book: 1. There are quite a lot of illustrations. 2. One-third of the book consists of footnotes (which also contain illustrations). I was reading it on the subway when I noticed some suggestive stares from those around me. I was reading the text while avoiding the suggestive illustrations, so I thought, "What's so strange about that...?" (Since the content isn't easy, it's unlikely the person next to me would think it's obscene even if they stared.)

Not long ago, while browsing through Kyobo Bookstore's bestsellers looking for something worth reading among social science books, I picked up this book because a title that truly piqued my curiosity caught my eye. Of course, that doesn't mean I actually bought it. I searched for it at the school library, but perhaps because it was a recent release, it wasn't there. So, I quickly requested a purchase and waited. The book arrived a few weeks later, and I got to read it... It was a shock in

Sometimes I have this thought... whether in the East or West, or among indigenous peoples or city dwellers, in almost all regions, women's sexuality is always concealed and depicted as a shameful part, while men are portrayed as symbols of dignity and confidence... The fact that people have lived with almost identical thoughts and customs regardless of the region... makes me wonder where this originated... Is this the limit of humanity...? Although I am gradually accumulating knowledge, I still
