Measuring Korea's Welfare and Happiness Indicators in the Era of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Recently, media articles, academic research, and policy discussions regarding happiness have been rapidly increasing. Why has public interest in happiness suddenly risen? People tend to take an interest when a problem arises—that is, when their condition deteriorates compared to the past. If so, is this heightened interest in happiness due to people feeling increasingly unhappy in recent times? Or is it because the number of people in our society who consider themselves unhappy has increased? Examining the numerous survey results and research reports published so far, it is difficult to conclude that the level of happiness in our society has noticeably declined recently. Therefore, the reason for this heightened social interest in happiness must be sought elsewhere. This book is the result of collaborative research conducted by social scientists interested in happiness, who gathered to discuss and collect diverse data. The primary focus of this study was not on general theories of happiness, but rather on the happiness that Koreans perceive and feel, as well as the factors influencing it. At a time when discussions on happiness in Korea are just beginning in earnest, it is our hope that the research findings on happiness and quality of life will contribute to the actual improvement of the public's happiness and quality of life.
