Description

The Institute of Japanese Studies at Hallym University is striving to fulfill its role as an institute by establishing infrastructure related to Japanese studies and research and providing it to the academic community and society. Specifically, it accumulates and provides knowledge related to Japanese studies by: first, operating the Library of Japanese Studies, the only specialized Japanese studies library in Korea officially registered with the Korean Library Association; second, establishing a Japanese studies database; third, continuously publishing quality books related to Japanese studies; and fourth, producing research results as a research group. Volume 5 of *Index of Article Titles in the Asahi Shimbun Foreign Edition (Korean Edition)* is the tenth book in the *Series of Japanese Studies Materials*, which the Institute of Japanese Studies at Hallym University has been publishing as part of its Japanese studies database project. It includes over 8,700 article titles and 2,400 index terms extracted from the pages of the *Asahi Shimbun* foreign edition (Korean Edition) covering the year 1926, spanning 525 A3 pages. Unlike the splendid rhetoric that this period achieved democratic development through ‘Taisho Democracy,’ one can glimpse the shadow of the transition to the Showa era, where power was maximized under Emperor-centrism, through events such as the ideological suppression of socialism and communism and the mobilization of the military to suppress the June Independence Movement that occurred on the occasion of Emperor Sunjong’s funeral. Meanwhile, articles regarding protests staged by Chuncheon citizens concerning the relocation of the Gangwon Provincial Office due to the city’s image as a ‘hermit city’ are also noteworthy. Through the article titles in Volume 5 of the *Index of Article Titles in the Asahi Shimbun Foreign Edition (Korean Edition)*, one can encounter the culture of East Asia, including Japan and China, surrounding the Korean Peninsula in the 1920s, as well as the lives of the people who lived there.
