Description

Hydrangeas are plants native mainly to the Northern Hemisphere. They are found across East Asia, especially China, Korea, and Japan, as well as in North America and many other countries, including Vietnam and India. Today, many new cultivars are also produced in places such as Colombia in the Southern Hemisphere and exported around the world. This book includes 2 genera, 71 original species, 10 subspecies, 4 varieties, and 876 cultivars, with more than 1,000 images, including photographs taken by the author in the field. Many people think of only the few hydrangea varieties they have personally encountered, but in reality hundreds or even thousands of cultivars are being developed. Using cultivar names as they are can raise issues involving royalties or patents, so importers, growing farms, and sellers often refer to diverse hydrangea cultivars collectively as “hydrangeas.” This situation is not especially complicated, and better approaches will likely be needed in the future. The hydrangeas featured here are listed in scientific-name order. Older species that are not well known today and species that are rarely cultivated are described only by their classification and characteristics. Even for the same species, personal experience is very important in cultivation. Conditions such as sunlight, soil composition, and water composition all make a difference, and the author hopes this book will help readers address those challenges, even a little.

The content is so rich and good. I’m glad I read it during hydrangea season, and I was moved because I could tell how diligently the author had studied hydrangeas.

I had no idea there were so many beautiful kinds of hydrangeas until I found this book. I was captivated by the lovely hydrangea photos as I turned each page; it’s a delight to look through. I’m moved that this one book lets me discover hydrangeas found abroad as well as in Korea. It’s definitely worth keeping, and it would make a lovely gift for someone special. The author is amazing for studying hydrangeas for so long and writing this book! I plan to recommend it enthusiastically to people
