Description

This book is the second translation of travelogues of Mt. Geumgang published by the Gyeongnam Cultural Research Institute of Gyeongsang National University. It contains a total of nine pieces, ranging from Min In-baek’s *Yusang* to Lee Myeong-han’s *Yupungakgi*. As is well known, a trip to Mt. Geumgang is a long-distance journey, even if departing from Hanyang; furthermore, because the major scenic spots in the Mt. Geumgang region are so extensively spread out, the itinerary typically lasts from one month to several months, unlike trips to other famous domestic mountains. Consequently, the volume of these works is overwhelmingly larger than that of other travelogues of famous mountains, which is why not many pieces could be included in each volume. Additionally, for the same reason, a significant number of trips to Mt. Geumgang are identified among officials assigned to the region. In the case of this book, all travelers fall into this category, with the exception of Shin Ik-seong, who came on leave to recuperate due to illness. For example, Min In-baek was the magistrate of Anyeop in Gangwon-do, Jeong Yeop was the deputy magistrate of Yangyang, Choi Yu-hae was a clerk in the Office of the Deputy Minister of Taxation, Lee Hyeon-yeong and Lee Myeong-han were the provincial governors of Gangwon-do, Lee Myeong-jun was the deputy magistrate of Gangneung, and Shin Jeop was the provincial governor of Gangwon-do; all of them toured Mt. Geumgang during their tenures. Therefore, this book will be useful for research examining the touring of Mt. Geumgang by government officials.
