Description

Gustave Doré’s *The Holy Bible*, illustrated by the great French artist Gustave Doré (1832–1883), is a work of cultural and historical value that will forever remain in 19th-century art history. Doré was a book artist who pioneered a milestone in art that captured social reality and demands. Treated as a maverick in the French art world of his time, Doré received no attention from the mainstream during his lifetime, yet the works he left behind had a profound influence on the work of later artists. Rather than following the Realism or Impressionism that were beginning to become popular at the time, he realized his own unique artistic world by utilizing "detailed depiction," "dramatic composition," and "fantastic and satirical themes." "Doré is a truly great artist. I tried to imitate Doré’s paintings, but it is too difficult." Vincent van Gogh. Doré was the most outstanding printmaker and book illustrator in 19th-century Europe, to the extent that it is said not only Vincent van Gogh but also Pablo Picasso were captivated by his fine lines and brushstrokes. Having breathed life into literary works such as Cervantes' *Don Quixote*, Charles Perrault's *Puss in Boots*, La Fontaine's *Fables*, and John Milton's *Paradise Lost*, Doré is regarded as the "father of modern illustration" and the "Caravaggio of the 19th century." Doré secured a firm position in the French publishing world in 1861 when his illustrations for Dante's *Divine Comedy* achieved popular success.

I hope that the Common Translation Bible will be used uniformly, not only for Protestant brothers and sisters but also for Catholic, Anglican, and Orthodox brothers and sisters. Currently, only the Deuterocanonical (Apocrypha) is the Common Translation, while the rest is the Revised Korean Version. This is somewhat regrettable.

I was debating whether to buy the large edition, but I hesitated to take it out to look at it often. Thanks to the release of this paperback edition, I think I will find myself reaching for it easily in the future. If you are familiar with Gustave Doré, I highly recommend purchasing this book to share in the moving experience!

Since I had already purchased the limited edition of Hangilsa's Doré's Illustrated Bible, I didn't feel the need to buy the paperback as well; however, I purchased it this time because I wanted to enjoy it on the go. Comparing it to the limited edition, I feel that Hangilsa put a lot of effort into making it accessible to a wider audience. Overall, the quality of the book was much better than expected for the price.
